What On Earth is Foaming Shower Oil?
A foaming shower oil is a hydrating body wash that takes a rich oil-based cleanser and transforms into a soft, creamy lather when mixed with water. It cleanses the skin without stripping away its natural moisture barrier leaving your skin soft and hydrated without a greasy oil-slick.
Yeah But How Does it Work? How Can Oil Wash You?
Typical shower gels use water and surfactants (foaming ingredients) to clean and bubble, but these can be harsh and drying on the skin, especially sensitive or very dry skin. Foaming shower oils solve this by packing the formula with high concentrations of nourishing plant oils.
Because oil usually kills foam, these cleansers are made using very specific formulas that when you massage the oil onto wet skin the ingredients create a reverse micro-emulsion. As you add water and lather, the oil magically turns into a luxurious, frothy milk or foam.
Foaming shower oils are ideal for dry, irritated or eczema-prone skin because it replenishes lipids rather than drying the skin out. It rinses off completely clean, leaving skin “satin-soft” rather than slick. It leaves skin so soft, you have to try it to believe it.
What Make My Formula So Amazing?
I love, love, love my shower oil! I spent such a long time trying to come up with the perfect formula, lots of trial batches and testing I nearly dissolved myself from constant washing… but finally I came up with the perfect combination of ingredients for what I will describe as the most luxurious way to get clean.
Surfactant Blend
If you know me you know I love being ‘extra’ so it shouldn’t come as any surprise that when I couldn’t settle on a single surfactant I just ended up using all of them and I’m pleased I did. First comes Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate derived from coconut oil and glycine (a naturally occuring amino acid). It is considered one of the gentlest surfactants available and produces a rich, thick creamy lather that feels conditioning on the skin. It is also biodegradable, naturally derived and sulfate-free.
Next I use a premixed blend of surfactants combining Sodium Cocoamphoacetate which is a mild amphoteric surfactant that boosts foam, Glycerin, a natural humectant, Lauryl Glucoside which is a mild non—ionic surfactant derived from coconut and glucose, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate which is a very mild amino-acid based anionic surfactant that also doubles as a petroleum-free solvent to help oil mix with water and lastly Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate which is made by reacting natural glucose (usually from corn starch) with fatty alcohols from coconut and is a natural foaming agent that helps provide a creamy, rich lather.
Second to last I use Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside which a plant-derived non-ionic surfactant made from coconut, it is widely used for its exceptional mildness but I chose it for its natural solubulizing abilities to mix oil and water (no more slippy shower or bath bases) plus its 100% biodegradable, ECOCERT and COSMOS compliant and its PEG-free.
Lastly (and this is where my ‘extra’ kicks in) I use a blend of plant-derived Coco Glucoside and Glyceryl Oleate which is used as a re—fatting agent, meaning it helps replace natural oils (by depositing lipids on to the skin) that are stripped away by cleansers leaving your skin feeling intensely moisturised and soft.
My Oil Blend
CASTOR OIL, known as the “Master Carrier Oil” it acts as a natural humectant and deep moisturiser. Because of its thick, nutrient-rich consistency and high concentration of ricinoleic acid, it draws moisture into the skin while preventing water loss in the steamy environment of the shower (or bath). It creates a protective barrier on the skin that seals in moisture, preventing the tight, dry feeling often caused by surfactants in traditional body washes.
It also has unique lipid-dissolving properties, I know it sounds counter-productive but bear with me, In a shower oil it helps attract and lift away dirt, excess sebum and impurities without stripping natural oils, this is where our final surfactant ingredient comes in by depositing clean, healthy lipids once the castor oil has removed those that have already done their job so to speak. It also combines with our surfactants to produce a rich, stable foam that gives the shower oil a silky glide.
SHEA OIL acts as an ultra-nourishing and protecting emollient. It helps the Coco Glucoside and Glyceryl Oleate blend to replenish the skin’s natural lipid barrier while you wash avoiding that tight feeling and locking in deep hydration without leaving a heavy, greasy residue. High in fatty acids and vitamins (A,E and F), it mimics your skin’s natural sebum to regenerate and hydrate very dry skin.
It forms a lightweight, protective film on the skin’s surface that prevents water loss during cleansing. Its anti-inflammatory properties help calm irritated, flaky or inflamed skin and it turns water and suds into a rich, milky lather that leaves your skin feeling incredibly soft and supple.
FRACTIONATED COCONUT OIL acts as a lightweight, non-greasy carrier oil. It deeply hydrates the skin, enhances the absorption of other beneficial ingredients and helps to lock in moisture without clogging the pores. It keeps its liquid state (as opposed to regular virgin coconut oil) that softens the skin without leaving a slippery, greasy residue. It helps to dissolve and carry fragrance oils and active skincare ingredients, distributing them evenly all over the body and it also forms a nourishing, feather-light barrier that seals in hydration during the shower.
How to Use It
In the shower let your skin get completely wet with warm water. Add 1-2 pumps of oil to a loofah or washcloth and lather it up. Smooth it over your body just like you would a regular shower gel and watch it transform into a creamy foam. Rinse thoroughly.
