Cupcakes & Strawberry Shakes Dusting Powder (200g)
The Scent
What are Dusting Powders?
We all remember the pot of Cashmere Bouquet in Grandma's bathroom, but dusting powders have come a long way since then. They are a finely milled, scented powders designed to absorb moisture, reduce skin friction/chafing and leave skin feeling soft and refreshed. Usually applied with a powder puff or brush it keeps you dry and comfortable all day.
Applied directly after drying off post-shower it prevents sweating and keeps skin dry. Used on areas where skin rubs together, such as underarms and between thighs it prevents chafing and applied after a body lotion or oil it locks in fragrance and moisture. It's also wonderful for babies.
Why Should I Use a Dusting Powder?
Using a dusting powder offers several benefits, particularly for enhancing comfort and hygiene after bathing.
Chafing and Moisture Control
It helps reduce moisture in areas prone to sweating, such as under the arms, neck or bust and between thighs, preventing irritation and chafing
Enhanced Skin Comfort
It creates a smooth, comfortable feel on the skin, acting as a great alternative for those who dislike the texture of thick lotions
Mattifying Body Lotions
Dusting powders can be used to set or mattify body lotions, making them less sticky
Why am I excited about talc-free powder?
Talc-free powders are used primarily to avoid potential health risks associated with asbestos contamination in talc, as well as to prevent skin irritation and pore clogging. Many consumers are turning away from talc due to safety reasons.
Health & Safety Concerns
Talc is a mineral often mined near asbestos, a known carcinogen.
Reduced Skin Irritation and Acne
Talc can be a trigger for acne and inflammation for those with sensitive skin
Prevents Pore Blockage
Talc can clog pores which is problematic for acne-prone skin types
Better Texture and Performance
Many talc-free powders use ingredients like silica, mica powder, tapioca or corn starch as well as other clays which can offer superior oil control and a smoother, less "caked' finish compared to traditional talc powders.
Prevents "Paste" Formation
Talc based powders can turn into a tacky, milky paste when mixed with sweat, whereas talc-free alternatives (such as those containing tapioca or corn starch) tend to stay powdery and keep you much drier
So, What’s so Good about My Dusting Powders?
I love dusting powders, there isn’t much to formulating them, but it does take a few tries to get the ratios just right and I think I have definitely managed it. Silky soft powder that leaves your skin smooth with just the right matte finish and no white geisha style layer, I add just the tiniest bit of pearl mica powder that leaves the slightest hint of shimmer without being glittery and I also add some extra ingredients so that your powder can also perform as a deodorant as well.
What are the Main Ingredients and What Do They Do?
Arrowroot Powder
Arrowroot is not just for moisture control but also considered “food for your skin” because it is a natural, nutrient-rich starch that nourishes, heals and protects the skin while improving the texture of personal care products. It is known for its ability to calm skin irritation, including rashes, acne and blemishes. It is an expert at absorbing excess oil and moisture, providing a matte, non-greasy feel to skincare products like lotions and body creams. It also gives a silky smooth texture without clogging pores. Being that it is a natural, organic starch, it feeds to skin with minerals and nutrients that support overall skin health.
Kaolin Clay
Is a gentle, mineral-rich clay known for its ability to cleanse and purify the skin without causing excessive dryness or irritation. It is considered one the gentlest clays making it suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin. It helps to balance skin oil production by absorbing excess sebum and has natural anti-inflammatory properties that help to calm irritated skin. It can also help to treat acne as a spot treatment to reduce the size and redness of pimples. It also has the ability to aid in drawing out impurities from the skin.
Colloidal Oats
This is a highly beneficial ingredient because it functions as a potent, natural skin protectant, recognised mostly for its ability to soothe, moisturise and repair the skin barrier. It is particularly effective for sensitive, dry or eczema-prone skin due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It contains polyphenolic antioxidants, such as avenanthramides, which help to reduce inflammation and calm irritated, itchy skin. It also acts as a protective, breathable barrier on the skin’s surface, helping to lock in moisture and protect against environmental irritants. It is ideal for sensitive skin and has been recognised by the FDA as a safe, over-the-counter (OTC) skin protectant, it is clinically shown to improve skin barrier function, sometimes within 24 hours and significantly reduce itching.
Zinc Oxide
Is a highly effective ingredient due to its combination of soothing, protective and moisture-absorbing properties. It is often used to treat skin irritation and prevent chafing. It is renowned for its ability to calm irritated, chafed or inflamed skin and also acts as a drying agent that helps to absorb sweat and excess moisture, keeping skin dry and reducing the risk of further irritation or infection from severe chafing. It forms a barrier on the skin’s surface, which protects against friction (chafing) and external irritants. It has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that help reduce redness and prevent infections and it safe for sensitive skin including conditions such as eczema or dermatitis
Triethyl Citrate
This ingredient acts as a highly effective, non-toxic and gentle deodoriser. It works by inhibiting the bacterial decomposition of sweat, which is the root cause of body odour, without effecting the skin’s natural, healthy microbiome. It specifically inhibits the esterase activity or bacteria that breaks down sweat in short-chain fatty acids and acts as a natural deodoriser, making it a really popular choice for those that prefer aluminum and talc free formulas. It acts as a liquid binder which enhances the skin-feel and helps to fix or stabilise fragrance allowing the scent to last longer. Triethyl citrate is derived from natural sources (citric acid and ethanol) and is totally biodegradable.
How Do I Use Dusting Powder?
You can apply dusting powder at any time, however it is perfect for after a shower or bath, ensure your skin is completely dry and either shake a small amount into your hand or dip your powder puff into the product and gently rub or pat the powder onto your skin. Focus on areas prone to sweating or chafing such as underarms, inner thighs, under the bust, back of the knees and the neck area. If you accidentally apply too much either use your puff to blend it out or simply use a clean dry towel and gently wipe away the excess before blending again.
